Checking Your URL Engine by Engine
You can also check your URL with each engine by hand. But before checking to see how you rank with the engines, the first order of business is to see if your site is listed at all.
Some engines make this easy, and some do not. Here are some tips for checking your URL on two that do.
AltaVista - search for host:yourdomainname.com
HotBot - search for domain:yourdomain.com
For others, I suggest that you simply search for your domain name. Another option is to include some meaningless word in your keywords (i.e. catmeow), and do a search on that after the site has been submitted.
To check your ranking for specific phrases, you'll have to enter each of your keyword phrases in each engine one at a time. Eliminating this tedious task is one one of the many features included in Web Position Gold.
Aside from that there are some online services that may be of help.
How Often Should I Resubmit?
To a large extent, how often you resubmit will be directly related to how many times you check your site's position. Again, if you have a program like Web Position Gold, checking your position across all the engines and directories is as simple as clicking a few buttons. However, if you are manually checking your rank, chances are you'll check much less frequently.
At a minimum, however, try to check your URL's rank monthly. By setting yourself up on a regular schedule you'll be much less likely to forget about it.
Should I Resubmit If I Am Ranking Okay?
Many people believe it is a good practice to resubmit every 4 to 6 weeks simply to ensure that they are not dropped from the index. It can't hurt, but note that this does not mean that you need to submit a new versions of your pages if you are already ranking well.
A general rule of thumb in resubmission is not to submit a new version of a page if you already have a favorable ranking. In other words, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' That snazzy new technique that you think might gain a higher ranking for your website just might result in a lower one.
With that said, the next most important thing you will want to monitor is the traffic coming to your site.
There are multiple ways to track your website rtraffic, including counters, trackers, and log analysis programs. Check with your hosting company most hosts supply you these tools free.
